“You’ll Never Know” has played a significant role in Barbra Streisand’s life because it the first song that a youthful Barbara ever recorded. And while in 2000, Barbra was drawn back to the song as a reflection on her feelings about the father she never knew because Emanuel Streisand died when she was not yet two years old. But when you consider the relationship Barbra had with her mother, the phrase you’ll never know  might describe how Barbra and Diana Kind felt about each other.

There’s no doubt that there was love and devotion between mother and daughter. When Barbra moved to Central Park West, so did her mother and sister. Years later, Barbra was in Beverly Hills, and her family followed. Diana was never out of Barbra’s life.

However, there were also plenty of comments from both Barbra and Diana for us to realize that theirs was a complicated relationship. When asked if she were proud of Barbra’s accomplishments, Diana’s response was “Who wouldn’t be proud?” She couldn’t come out and say the words, so she made it into a generalization. Is it any wonder, then, that when Barbra appeared live in 1994 at “The Concert” and spoke to her mother from the stage and asked, “Are you proud of me now, Mom?”

I’ve endured Larry Kramer’s outbursts in the past, not wishing to dignify them with a response. But at a time when we are all pulling together to achieve such giant steps toward gay equality, it is anguishing to me to have my devotion to this cause so distorted. I think my efforts for the gay community and my immersion in securing its constitutional entitlement and other equitable rights is quite evident and a matter of record.
